romanticism: how beautiful, majestic, powerful
naturalism: waters indifferent to life
realism: waters can be a calm beach or a dangerous tide, so judge well by circumstance
modernism: this obviously symbolizes human greed and desire
postmodernism: beyond the surface is a complex interaction of elements comprising this ocean, of which the outcomes are as random as they are unknown

May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and a road downhill all the way to your door. (Irish blessing)

SEVENTEEN

ERROL MORRIS’ FIRST PERSON

Hippos on Holiday

is not really the title of a movie
but if it was I would be sure to see it.
I love their short legs and big heads,
the whole hippo look.
Hundreds of them would frolic
in the mud of a wide, slow-moving river,
and I would eat my popcorn
in the dark of a neighborhood theater.
When they opened their enormous mouths
lined with big stubby teeth
I would drink my enormous Coke.

I would be both in my seat
and in the water playing with the hippos,
which is the way it is
with a truly great movie.
Only a mean-spirited reviewer
would ask on holiday from what?

by Billy Collins

are yours real

In order to distinguish “real” unicorn horn from false one, elaborate tests were devised. Among them are the following:

  • Place scorpions under a dish with apiece of horn. If the scorpions die in a matter of hours, the horn is real.
  • Feed arsenic to pigeons, followed by a dose of Unicorn horn. If the pigeons live, the horn is genuine.
  • Draw a ring on the floor with the horn. If the horn is real, a spider will not be able to cross the ring.
  • Place the horn in cold water. If the water bubbles but remains cold, the horn came from a Unicorn.
